The Edge Of Vicinity

The thought monsters haunted the perimeter of the vicinity. The murders of crows sat framed against the threatening clouds and the service dogs patrolled the borders.

The thought monsters were lethal. When they caught their prey they extracted any and all thoughts and left meagre, unwanted memories behind. The pitiful victims were discarded to a brief blind existance in the wastelands beyond the boundary. Silas Barnsfather knew this. Yet still he ventured beyond the edge. His technique was to empty his mind of all coherent thought and walk briskly through the least densely populated gathering of the thought monsters. He had his own service dog, which helped. The service dog, which he called Handsome would emit a deep bass growlsound if his thoughts should start to gather some semblance of order. This would keep the monsters at bay just long enough for him to move beyond their range. As he moved away from the vicinity and the reach of the encircling thought monsters he allowed his thoughts to come flooding back in a rush. This often caused him to gasp and struggle with all the outrages he had seen and done. As he reached higher ground he often needed to rest to regain his strength from the exercise. While leaning back against a ruined building he would look back to the ever shrinking vicinity. The taller of the towers were now running to ruin and even at a distance he could smell the decay. A crow landed by his foot and started casually picking at his worse for wear boot. He kicked at it and it cawed away. He wrapped his coat closer against the coming weather and got to his feet. He felt a little rested and his thoughts were now fully functioning.

Silas Barnsfather had decided that those waiting within the vicinity for his return would wait until their particular hell froze. The end would be soon. He could do nothing more for them. He called Handsome from his resting place, pulled on his face mask and headed beyond the edge of vicinity looking for the new.
