He pulled his heavy overcoat closer about him as he descended the hotel steps. The snow was starting to fall. The streets were pretty much deserted. On the sidewalk Jay von Staffel pushed his hands deep into his pockets whilst he waited patiently for the autocab to arrive. He felt the compac vibrate as the cab rounded the corner and pulled towards the kerb. The wide door slid aside to allow him entrance and an automated voice bid him a personalised welcome. The cab was old, maybe 50 years, it could have been one of the very first. The state company that ran and maintained the autocabs were meticulous and this cab, thought Jay, was as near perfect as the day it rolled off the production line.
As the cab made its confident way to the programmed destination Jay von Staffel contemplated his task. He went through the timings in his head one more time. The cab pulled quietly to the side of the road, opened a connection to Jay's compac but instead of receiving the expected payment it was sent a sophisticated code to cause it and all the other autocabs in the area to quickly deteriorate into inanimate hulks.
Step one, complete.
Jay walked quickly away, the thickening snow quieting his steps. He soon reached his destination at the end of a darkened alleyway. Again, his compac vibrated and a hidden door opened to allow him in.
Step two, complete.
Through the door in what was clearly a private club, Jay shrugged off his heavy overcoat grabbing two vicious looking weapons from the sleeves as it fell. Snow swirled behind him in the open doorway as he took aim with both weapons. He swiftly eliminated the first rank of guards and half the second rank before any had time to react. The glow from the muzzle illuminating the scene with an orange cast.
Step three, complete.
He had the supreme leader in view. His compac was vibrating wildly. He eliminated the final guards, pulled the compac from his belt and threw it directly at the supreme leader. It was a perfect arrow throw, but it fell dead less than a metre from its victim. The supreme leader hardly let any emotion cross his face. Jay Von Staffel on the other hand fell to his knees and held his arms wide in supplication.
Step four, failed.
