Mathilda usually worked the left-hand side of the street. It
suited her temperament. On the odd occasion that she had worked on the opposite
side something disastrous had happened.
She was, after all, left-handed, and so she discovered after
a well aimed kick at a surly punter, left footed. Working the left often didn’t
help with the bills, the crawlers preferred the right-hand side. That was just
the way it had to be. Mathilda couldn’t see very well from her right eye after
an angry punter gouged it out for her.
